I like robust red wines too - Amarone is always a good bet.
However you did not mention any Spanish wines (maybe not so available in the U.S. as here in Ireland - but worth the effort if you can find them). Ribera del Duero or Priorats can be fantastic. I think Robert Parker turned the world on to Ribera del Duero not too long ago.
One good thing about living in a country which does not priduce wine is that we get a great selection from everywhere else - the bad thing is the government tax it to the hilt!
