No they don't make them like they used to. I think that's a good thing besides Saabs and some other imports engine lives were short. Due to advancements in manufacturing and oil you can expect a car to run much longer than the past.
Because of emission controls and computers I can't even tell what's what under my hood but that's probably a good thing. On my first cars i would take a weekend trying to fix something and just get frustrated, now that I'm older I would rather pay someone to fix it and call me when it's ready.
The only things I like to do are the brakes because you can save a ton by doing it yourself.
