of the Prius and a few other "mid-size family cars" as they call them. It ranked well, but with the kinds of cars included in the test the bar was set kinda low (Malibu, Honda Accord (4 cyl), Mitsu Gallant, Mazda 6, couple others)
Prices range from about $22K to $28K. All have similar dimensions to a Saab 9000 or 9-5.
They are slow, get mediocre fuel economy, and are simply appliances.
All the Prius really had going for it was city fuel economy (and maybe the hatch). And CR noted the big downside--you get to replace the batteries somewhere around 100K-150K for about $3K or so. Never mind what the engine and transaxle will be like by then. Talk about a throwaway car!
When you think that you can buy a very nice CPO 9-5 for $22K or less, or a top condition 9K CSE/Aero for half of that and get far better performance, more safety, more room, and still good fuel economy, it sure shows how far behind other makes still are. And what a great value Saabs are.
