The neat thing about hybrids, and the reason they make sense for stop-and-go driving is this: DC motors basically make 100% of their rated torque from zero rpm to their maximum rpm. Additionally, it dosen't take a very large DC motor to make a mountain of torque. The current issue is electricity storage.
That's why full electric vehicles will never be a large-scale reality. Hybrids can side-step that problem partially by creating that electricty on the fly. Ultra Capacitors potentially hold promise for large temporary electricty storage and light weight. Fuel cells are a great idea but won't be viable for the consumer for at least 10-15 years.
In the meantime, even with heavy conventional battery storage, what could be better than recovering free energy during braking to be unleashed again during acceleration?
A conventional turbo charged front drive car coupled seamlessly with rear electric motor assist powered-by lightweight ultra-capacitors could mean acceleration heaven and increased city gas mileage. It is coming, hopefully sooner than later.
