Maine's *beaches* vs. Maine's coast

Maine's got more coastline than the rest of the eastern seaboard, if you were to stretch out all the coves and inlets (just mainland: ~4500mi, with the 4600 islands: ~7000mi). However, the number of really nice sandy beaches is somewhat limited since it's a pretty rocky coast. If you do come to Maine, you'd better do it soon! The water is colder here even than just down in Cape Cod. Surfing waves are rare to find. Don't get sucked into the Old Orchard Beach tourist trap. I hear there are nice beaches in Ogunquit and I *know* there are nice beaches in Scarborough, Cape Elizabeth, and up near Bath -- they're sandy and beautiful. Jasper Beach, which is sigificantly further east in Machiasport, is a beautiful stone beach, though not so comfortable to sunbathe on.
The Maine beaches (save Old Orchard) are generally quite clean and well-kept.
