Just yesterday I read an article in a Swedish newspaper about the fusion and split between Saab and Scania and how they both (after lots of wrangling) got to keep the emblem.
It also mentioned that it wasn't really clear when and how the Griffin (Gripen in Swedish) got to be the emblem of choice at Scania Truck company in the early years.
The Griffin is also the County logo (sort of State animal in US) of Skåne County (I use the word County loosely here). Skåne is the very South part of Sweden.
Scania is also the Latin word for Skåne.
Maybe the Truck company started down there or one of the founders of Scania came from that region?
