<<At 96k, my budget is $2-3k per year. By my definition, that qualifies as a reliable car with average maintenance cost.>>
I have repairs of $1-1.5k/year in a 900S NG and find the amount outrageous (1t 100k), especially for a known-history car that has been babied.
By comparison, as I have mentioned earlier, I have taken two cars to 200k miles, with repairs of $300 per car total, not annual (one was an '85 Civic which was driven in mostly winter, only thing that ever broke was an alternator ($300)) and my wife's daily driver is a '95 Corolla, now at 210k miles, whose only repairs have been a DIY starter and alternator ($300 total also). Right now it needs a valve/piston ring job, and given the car's history, I have no problems with it.
As a friend commented when he gave me a ride to the shop, I could have leased or bought a disposable car of some kind with similar payment to what I'm putting in for repairs year after year.
And, around here (Indianapolis) no independent I know accepts BYOP, and their labor rates are only a few $ less than the dealer, if that.
But, as we say in Greece, "the good day shows off in the morning". The NG900 stranded me with 600 miles on the odometer :-) (power steering fluid hose clamp popped out)
