I actually prefer my 9-5 with Nokian RSI snows to my Subaru Legacy with Nokian WRs in the snow. The Saab is more predictable in its handling. Granted, I can't easily break the rear end free on a turn in the snow and drive diagonally like I can in the Subaru, but really, that's not the most useful feature in everyday driving ;-)
Now that every car has leather, nav systems, sunroofs, etc., car makers are tacking on AWD in order to have something else to market and to keep up with each other. That's where this 'a snowflake==AWD is needed' meme comes from. In 14 years of driving, I've never gotten stuck, ever, in the snow. Until the Subaru I bought 15 months ago I've always had FWD with good tires. My old 90 Camry was great in the snow with good all-season tires, I think because it's 115 hp motor never put enough power to the ground to get me into trouble, even with a stick shift.
I'd prefer AWD if I routinely drove in ill-plowed conditions, or up a lot of steep hills, but that's about it.
