From comparisons between my 4wd truck and my FWD, 4wd certainly is not a far better setup than FWD. 4wd has the disadvantage that you really have to concentrate on not going too fast. Also, the design of the car/truck is important. Saab's FWD bias means that it's hard to lose control whereas I can get my truck to spin completely around just by hitting the gas and turning the front wheel. Now, supposedly Subarus are good in the snow, but the weight penalty is a bit too much for me. Certainly, Subarus likely have a better balance than my truck, which is lighter in the rear end. As for sustained pitches of 20%, if it snows this weekend, I'll try to make it up a hill that has at least that gradient if not more. It's out of my way (I typically ride my bike up it, though), but I'll see if I can get the Saab up it.
