4.2 isn't a very high weighted GPA. I think the valedictorian at my school had a 5.3 or something. I think that most universities only look at unweighted GPAs for admission. You probably need 3.8-4.0 to be considered for an ivy league. Also consider that unless your kid was valedictorian/salutatorian they don't have a very good chance either.
You also probably need to be state champion/ 1st place in something serious (national debate, state single sport, etc). As it is now, your child seems like the other 30,000 brilliant kids who apply each year.
