Soto in Atlanta has reopened serving a fixed price chef's tasting menu. This alleviates the horrid service that the place was always pegged with and again elevates Soto's food to some of the best Japanese cuisine in the country (he's usually listed in the top 7 in N.A. with places like Nobu and Tojo's in Vancouver).
A friend and I went last night. It was $75 each for a 14 course extravaganza lasting about 3:15. Yes, 3 hours, 15 minutes. Some of the courses consisted of multiple items, but rarely more than 3 bites of any one thing. While you never eat a lot of everything, you eat a little of more different items than you can even keep track of, particularly if you are enjoying adult beverages the entire time. Missing are the ever-popular rolls, but in their place are tasty Japaneses delights that only and artist like Soto could create.
Rather than waste your time with my inadequate words, I've included a link to a site where someone visited recently leaving a great review and pictures. This was when it was 17 courses but people were having to give up before it was over due to fullness - he's still working out the kinks and trying to size the proportions/pricing correctly. At any rate, if you dream about great Japanese food and will be in the Atlanta area any time soon, make sure you make a reservation at least 24 hours in advance. They do not take walk-ins even if the restaurant is half full as some of the dishes require hours of preparation and use costly ingredients. Particularly special was the foie gras wrapped in Kobe-grade beef in a spoon that you are instructed not to eat until Soto comes by your table to add a splash of fresh hot dashi broth which immediately melts the foie gras (it's the bottom spoon in the picture). What else do I have to say?
