If safety is top priority, and it would be my top priority in your situation, I would go with a Saab 9000. Of course, model year depends on how much money you're willing to spend, but a 9000 CS with light-pressure turbo provides enough hp to get him out of a tight jam every now and then, but it's not crazy fast. The '95 model year would be a good choice. The 9000 was consistently safer than the 900 for all the model years that they were co-produced.
I read the posts about the 9000 engine being hard to work on, and I would have to disagree. I've learned all my repair skills on my own, and with a Haynes manual, it's not hard at all. I find the engine easy to get at and easy to work on, and with this bulletin board, there is plenty is advice available.
