extremely cheap these days. If you have USB or Firewire ports in you old computer, just buy an external drive with USB/Firewire ports and store all your files in the external drive. When you buy a new computer, just move the external drive over and you're set.

Browse your weekly ads from your local chain stores, external drives are cheap as well, somewhere in the $100 to $200 range and you get somewhere around 100G to 200G and that's plenty for songs. You can also buy an external drive enclosure for around $30-50 and up and you pick a drive, usually buy something on sale, to put into the enclosure if you are handy in that kind of things. I started out using disk enclosures but external drive prices have come down so much, it's almost not worth the extra work.

If you store video, then you want more than 200G as a single layer DVD holds about 4.7G or so. So you do the math as to how many DVD you want 8-).

I think Seagate hard drives are better, runs a bit cooler. But Western Digital drives are constantly on sale but the Western Digital Caviar drives I have (ranges from 120G to 250G) whine a bit loud for my taste. I have two Seagates and they are quieter. I heard Samsung SATA drives are whisper quiet but I haven't had much experience.

One last thing, when you start storing things in hard drives of 100G and up, you may want to have back that drive up as well, so you may think about buy two drives 8-) just in case.
