The Network-Attached Storage is from Iomega and is 160gb. It plugs into a port on the router for our 3-PC family network (2 WiFi one Ethernet). Two of the family PCs run automated backups to it through WiFi. I have an 80gb firewire external I inherited from one of my sons that I use for automated backups for my PC. It is very fast, but this particular model (ProMAX) has its own internal cooling fan and is kind of noisy. For another son, I put a 80gb internal HD in a generic CompUsa USB enclosure for about $80 all in. He uses it to back up his iPod music.
If you have an older PC and decide to go USB external, you may need to put a (cheap) USB 2.0 card into your PC - old USB 1.1 is dead slow in big file transfers.
