Egan may know cars, and may have a good eye for stylish vehicle (and BMW bikes definitel do have a high-quality look to them), but try to find motorcycle magazine comparison with motorcycle guys favoring them.
BMWs are very nice bikes. Whether they are better than their competitors (at 1.5 to 2 time the $), most people say no. But BMW doesn't have to sell to everyone, and that's fine. They certainly have earned their status as the premier sport-tourer. I wish more people in the US appreciated that class of bikes.
Regarding the Boxer racing series, I think that 2004 was its last year.
What's more impressive, a racing series dedicated to a single bike (well-known worldwide, with deep pockets), or the VFR800, a direct descendent of the RC45, who's history in World Superbike Racing (against all makes) is well-documented?
"BMW are the only folks who have figured out how to make a sporty shaft drive bike", what about the MotoGuzzi 1100 Sport?
