There are two slots. One built in and inaccessible and one behind a cover on the bottom of the laptop that is easily accessible. I can take out the 256MB DIMM and replace it with a 512MB for $50. I will actually probably do this. I'm researching now to see if the Inspiron 1100 will accept a larger (1GB?) DIMM in that user accessible slot. It does say we could take it to a service center to have them disassemble without voiding the warranty to put in a 512MB DIMM in the built in, but not user-accessible slot. If I find that's not hard to do, I'll do that too, but I cannot screw up this machine, so no playing around.
