Not too long ago, the FCC made cell phone companies either a) stop setting up customers with non-location-providing phones or b) update all their tower sites to have the ability to automatically triangulate the location of any cell phone user.
Looks like VZ is choosing the first choice. You'd have to find a CDMA using provider using the triangulation method to utilize the same phone, which probably isn't that common. Companies using the same technologies like to remain compatible so they can roam with each other. We all pay into e911, and location reporting is part of e911 which is pretty popular.
Location reporting would also be handy for the feds to track down people like Kevin Mitnick, or terrorists, drug dealers, or other people who prefer not to be tracked, much less listened to.
I use a Nokia 6161, which is a similar aged phone. Works great and I hope I never have to give it up for a new one. The new ringtones are aweful. I put a $15 battery on it and get better battery life than new ones which aim to be compact and sexy at the expense of life and reliability.
