At the very least, take Vitamin C far above the pathetic US Recommended Daily Allowance. There's plenty of research out there about Vitamin C in particular. A good place to start is The Vitamin C Foundation. I also have been using a generic multivitamin (roughly 100% of about a couple dozen different vitamins/minerals) for years. Just in the past year, I have also been supplementing with a few other vitamins, such as Vitamin E, B-complex, beta-carotene, and calcium/magnesium/zinc. There's a ton of research out there both in books and on the internet. I almost never get sick, and haven't called in to work sick in over 15 years. I do get colds once in a while. But, they are usually short lived, and always follow a period of overwork and/or not enough rest. At those times I take even more vitamin C than normal. I don't take flu shots and can't remember the last time I had it. Many animals' bodies generate their own vitamin C, but some do not, including humans and primates. Primates' diets include enough vitamin C to provide 1000-2000 mg a day per 70kg of body weight. That's about 17-33 times the USRDA. Animals whose bodies synthesize vitamin C produce an even greater amount as a percentage of body weight.
