I know what you mean...used to have to polish/clean my white 84 900T every year...some polishes like NuFinish just gray out even if you wax every 60 days or so in the DC area. The tire dust just gets into the polish.
I use Malm's polish (get the ultra fine stuff, it comes with some carnauba wax in it) to clean the old stuff off but then you have to wax/seal it with either malms carnauba or Meguiars crystal or your choice. The key is the malms polish...it's an ultra fine polish..it's a little too fine to take out scratches but works really well on swirls.
