I gotta ask a question about Cali walls and roofs

...I live on the block where an airplane went down in Queens, NY a month after 9/11. I am sure many Sabneters have seen the videos. A wooden one-hundred year old house close to the fire survived. An identical wooden one-hundred year old house further away burned down. The only difference...One had Aluminum siding and the other had either vinyl or none (I can't recall). The Aluminum siding on the closer house actually melted in some areas, but the wooden house survived.
So my question. If you live in an area prone to fires, why not protect yourself from ash and embers with slate roofs and Aluminum siding? Why not get rid of vinyl and get rid of roofs made of wood or tar? Use roofs made of slate, ceramic, metal, clay, etc...
Why don't insurance companies in those areas insist on these things? When embers and hot ash can float for 1 mile and start new blazes, just cutting vegitation close to ones house does not seem to be enough.
I feel really bad for these people. I would guess 50k people may have no homes to go back to. Maybe new building regulations are in order?
It seems we have the technology, but everyone still builds wood homes with wooden shingles. I hope someone wisens up so future generations are spared the loss of life and property.
Until then, maybe we Saabnet members can come together as a team and create a charity.
Best,
C
