The problem with retrofitting clay or tile is weight. Old structures are marginal at best, and the added weight overloads them. So people have tried the lightweight concrete roof tiles. They are brittle and break really easy. So the next one is metal. Their fine, but most convenant controlled areas don't allow for them. Then there is composite shingle (tar with colored sand). They work ok, but most find them ugly. Finally their is impregnated wood shakes. There are new issues because of arsenic, and the fire retardant decays the wood, so the lifespan is rather short.
New construction is a different beast since current codes in fire prone areas typically are somewhat strict and require fireproofing materials, etc.
Best way is simply insure your old home properly; That doesn't mean taking the cheapest policy out there unless you are a risk taker, and making sure you opt for the policy that covers reconstruction to current codes (that one kills alot of dreams since you can't rebuild to non-compliance unless a federal disaster was issued, and codes change every 3 years). The odds of being involved in a forest fire are somewhat slim.
