I feel your pain. I'm not saying that you didn't break the letter of the law, and the cop was within his rights of his power to stop you, but, while he could have been less kind and written you a ticket, he could also have been more kind and given you a verbal warning. With a written warning, it's pretty much a certainty that if you get stopped in the next couple of years, you will get a ticket.
There are many bizarre locations of stop signs; I'm in no position to judge whether or not this is one, but it does not sound in any way like you did anything dangerous or put another person at risk.
On the other hand, if you had stopped and accelerated right back up to the speed of the other car and tailgated him from 3 feet behind at 1 mph below the speed limit, that would have been much more dangerous. But, I bet you wouldn't have been stopped for that. That is the sort of thing that really p's me off, and makes me feel like I am the 'them' in the 'us versus them' relationship society has with law enforcement. I'm not a serial offender; I have one current moving violation on my record, but the reasons why I have been stopped and my treatment when I have leaves me feeling that I am an enemy of law enforcement. If they treat me as their enemy, it leaves me to conclude/feel that they are my enemy. That's hardly a good thing.
