You can sort vehicles by gas mileage and other so-called 'green' characteristic using the EPA website. If I was getting an econobox, it would probably be a Mazda3 with a PZEV engine.
BUT! I wouldn't go too small and sacrifice the safety inherent in a larger vehicle. Drive 15K mi/yr at 25 mpg and you use 600 gallons/yr; at 20 mpg you use 750 gallons. At $4/gallon in LA, that extra 150 gal/yr works out to be $600/yr or $50/month. So, if you can afford the extra $50/month, go for a 9-5 and get a sweet ride with 5-star safety all around. You'll get splattered in one of these econoboxes and not even care about that extra $50 that would've saved your life.
