Like Ken B, I left my new Turbo-X at home today and biked 9 miles to work.
Part of my bike to work routine depends on where I'll be keeping the bike and whether I'll be making stops other than the commute. I'll ride my road bike and lock it and shower at a health club, when all I have to do is get to work and not carry things. It will be locked inside so it's more secure. I'll take a cheaper mountain bike (with road tires) if I have other places to go, need to carry a laptop in a messenger bag, etc. either leaving it at the train or taking it on the train downtown. It will be locked outside.
There is about 3 miles through a park, a mile through a neighborhood and then serious city riding, so traffic is relatively slow, lots of stoplights and cab and bus avoidance is key. Go to an independent bike dealer (two of my bikes are Treks, one is an old Italian racing bike) and take advantage of their advice.
