Audis are gussied up VWs, but Audi has done a consistent job of marketing itself as an upscale make. It really does compete with Mercedes and BMW at certain price points. I usually wind up riding in A-6 or A-8 Audis when I got to Europe and they are definitely nicer cars than a 9-5.
VW is no longer the cheap seats and offers some nice cars. I agree that Saab is pretty much a direct competitor for price and content, but with a very different type of car. If Saab were positioned to compete with VW, (which might require some de-contenting of the 9-3 until the lower-end models we've heard about are available) it would also compete with Nissan, Toyota, Honda and Mazda. That would bring some real choices into the market and assuming Saab is actually marketed sufficiently would be a boost for the make.
I remember back in 1984 (when there was a waiting list for Saabs) paying about $11.5K for a new C900 sedan (base model, non-turbo). The Honda Accord cost about the same, as did a Passat. And whatever happened to selling Saabs with cloth seats, no sunroofs, and a few less amenities? There's still a market for quality cars without every bell and whistle.
