I think you have to look at value for the dollar of the whole deal. You get a lot of car with a Saab that's in decent shape, even if it needs some stuff. If you get a decent car for a reasonable price and spend some $$ it's a good deal because the car becomes a bit more of a known quantity. For a solid, durable car I think you have to see the value. A decent Saab isn't a throwaway old Cavalier.
For example, I paid $2k for my daughter's '95 9K four and half years ago. Needed tires, brakes, exhaust, some hoses, tune up, serp belt, CV boots. Did 90% myself. About $1500 in all with the tires. But since then it's needed almost nothing beyond some routine service and stuff due to age. I knew the PO and got all the records on the beast. I'd have spent about the same total amount for a car that needed less, but I'd know a lot less about it, probably had to fix some of the same stuff, and would likely still have had to do tires.
You pay your money and take your choice on any used car, but in 25 years of Saabs I really don't find them all that pricey to own, provided you're a decent wrench and can do a chunk of the work yourself.
