certainly it's cheapest to DIY but not essential... I do some myself + some I take to our indy. Sure I have spent plenty on labor, but he's also found us good used parts for next to nothing at times! We've fixed just about everything on our 900, several times over even, yet it still costs less than a new Honda Civic to own. You can do an awful lot of repairs on a $1500 900 for the cost differential vs a new Civic!! Our annual repair bills on the 900 at our indy are comparable to the insurance difference between the 900 and a 9-5!
The most important thing to keep costs down: never take it to the dealer!
Bottom line: do your best to get one that is rust free. Everything else can be fixed + is worth fixing.
