great read!
I particularly liked the interview with Envall. I hadn't realized that he was essentially forced out by GM... very interesting. You look at the Saab designers over the years: Sixten Sason (92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 99), then Bjorn Envall (99, 900, 9000, NG900), and Einar Hareide (NG900, 9-5, 9-3, 9-3SS), each overlapped their predecessor (and presumably learned from them), and each new generation of cars really had a connection to the preceding cars (even if there were differences too)...
Then in 2000, GM brought in Mauer + Lo. Probably great designers, but no connection to the design history. All the cars they've designed (imho) lack that connection. And none of their cars appeal much to me, whereas all of the prior ones did.
It would be really cool if the folks from Koenigsegg got together with some of the surviving old-school Saab designers, to really dig out the essence of what made those older cars great. The interview with Envall hints at a good part of it! I agree with him. Chaos is exciting.
James...
