Always try to avoid having a courier service do the import paperwork for you. As you've discovered, they will do it wrong AND charge you big.
Normally you can call once you have a tracking number and ask to clear the item through customs yourself, as long as you are in the city where the customs warehouse for that courier is located.
Ship via post if you can. Coming in to Canada, they charge $5 plus whatever taxes and duties are due. Note: there is hardly ever duty on anything any more (due to NAFTA and other trade agreements) but there will always be taxes payable (in my case provincial and federal taxes).
I buy from the U.S. all the time and rarely have trouble. The only time there has been an issue is when I tried to use Fedex and have them clear it because I wanted it faster. Silly me. Two weeks later I took a drive to the US and picked up the parcel from the Fedex warehouse in the US and imported it myself. The shipper had filled the paperwork incorrectly and the item was turned back at Customs, it was taking forever for Fedex to resolve the problem AND they would have charged me big to do that.
