I had to laugh reading your description of UPS' disti centers - it's all in all pretty accurate as when in college I worked at one - lasting about a year. I would start work at 5 PM and in the summer the big trailers would sit would doors closed and soaking up heat all day long - so when you opened it and had to unload it the heat was unbearable and by the time you were finished you were soaked in sweat . and yes a supervisor would occasionally time you. These were the big trailers with 2 layers to be unloaded - the bottom layer was bad news if it was heavy packages as you had to throw them up to the rollers.
Also when you got stuff that was marked fragile - a lot of guys including myself would occasionally handle this stuff extra hard, TV picture tubes and flourescent light shipments took a beating for sure. If you threw a package and heard a smashing sound it kind of brought a short term feeling of satisfaction as the work was so hateful and repetitive in nature.
