I like the 4 sided screw extractors better Posted by IanC [Email] (#139) [Profile/Gallery] (more from IanC) on Mon, 29 Mar 2010 17:24:21 In Reply to: Re: Broken Bolt Help!!!!, turbocon86, Mon, 29 Mar 2010 12:43:58 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Having broken a screw extractor like the one pictured in a '96 900 SETC front rotor set screw, I'm not a fan of that style. I picked up some 4 sided screw extractors at Sears. They're tapered and have a sharpened edge. They work the same way.
Whatever you do, take it slow and prep the bolt like others have suggested. This is a 5 minute job if prepared correctly. I'm a little concerned it was a SS bolt that sheared, the head shouldn't be weaker than the fastener's interaction with the threads. You may want to progressively drill larger holes, that should weaken the thread's grip as well as let you use a stronger extractor. Again, it's that first hole that will determine your success!
Good luck!
