You'd think they'd want MORE dealers, it's not like there's a Saab dealer on every corner. Dealer proximity is very much a factor when it comes to purchasing a car. The more dealers you have to more likely people in a given local will be to buy one. Since dealers generally foot most of the expenses involved (property, building, etc) I don't get the push to close them. Personally I think Saab would be smart to rethink the way they do dealerships, maybe get away from the push toward the mulit-million dollar glass and chrome Taj Mahal mentality and think out of the box. Customers aren't stupid, they know you pay for all that infastructure when you go in for service. How many people on this board go to dealers for service? Maybe Saab could hook up with some of the really good independants and make them official Saab service centers? You might have to buy a car someplace else but then you could get it serviced locally. The current dealer model is an extremely expensive proposition and may not work with a low volumne manufacturer like Saab. They really should think about trying something different.
