the freezer can trip the GFCI outlet. The initial current draw from the freezer can change with age and use so that may explain the GFCI tripping.
However, before you change to a regular outlet, I would carefully check the wiring to the outlet from the kill switch making sure the wires are good, no loss of insulation, no water seepage, or intermittent short possible.
I have the usual GFCI outlet in a bath room that both of my girls use. Often enough, the hair drier initial turn on would trip the GFCI.
