GFCI's don't trip on load, they trip on ground fault. They monitor the current flowing through the hot and neutral. If these are not equal, the GFCI opens the circuit because some current is going to ground. A short or overload won't trip them. AFCI's can trip on load. GFCI's often trip in damp locations.
Replace with a non-GFCI but check to see if it's protecting outlets down stream. If so, swap it with the next outlet and everything down line will still be GFCI protected. GFCI's will keep you from getting a nasty shock if you have any faulty wiring in tools or appliances.
A freezer in the garage is OK but a refrigerator in a garage is a bad idea unless you're in a warm climate.
