I did not realize you had test driven the new 9-5 (as so few people have had that chance). So, you do not care for its driving experience and it does not have enough "Saab DNA" to use a frequently used phrase. OK, each person has an opinion and you say you understand how it got to this point and you do not blame Saab.
If you have been reading the ongoing saga of the Saab sale and its new independence you will see that Victor Muller and the folks at Saab are aware that Saab models under the GM reign lost some of that essence that made Saab different. They say they want to and plan to get back to that, so what else is there to do at this point but let them sell what is ready? For the new designs, they get to call the shots now so they will succeed or fail based on how good a job they do. What do you WANT them to do with the current 9-3 model and the new 9-5? Start an ad campaign that says, "Introducing the new lousy GM-inspired Saab 9-5. Or you can wait until we can design and bring to market another model with the distinctive Saab features that historically made us unique"?
I just don't get the Saab-bashing from Saab enthusiasts at this point in the company's history. For years people wished that either GM would let Saab do its own thing or cut it loose to be independent. Now it is there (as opposed to being shut down completely). Now there is a chance that Saab can get back to its roots, while also pioneering modern technology (another of Saab's historical traits). Nobody is making anyone buy a new 9-5, the 9-4X or even the current 9-3. But, dealers are saying there is pent up demand for THOSE products that will allow Saab to get back to its target of selling 100,000 cars per year. Not this year, but hopefully they can get back there in 2011. That will allow Saab to be profitable again and move forward. You can wait for the next generation of Saab models...as long as they sell enough of these to survive. I hope they do.
