There may well be a card associated with your airline. Most of these require an annual fee. Depending on the airline and/or the bank, you will normally get 1 mile credit for each dollar of purchase. You will get actual miles credit for flights. Some cards offer double mile credits for airline travel purchases on their line.
You have to be the one who decides whether the annual fee is worth it.
If the airline offers a roundtrip for x number of points (usually 25,000), keep in mind that there are often blackout periods when you can't use them for tickets. And normally, the airline will only offer a limited number of seats which can be used for frequent flyer travel on individual routes.
I used to use Northwest frequently, for both family and some business travel. Used the Northwest affiliated card, and was able to rack up a lot of miles buying my products. Northwest is gulped up by Delta, which uses American Express. My supplier doesn't accept Amexco (costs seller too much)--bummer.
