You just have to pick what works for you. A lot depends on how much you fly and your threshold of pain.
I fly out of MHT and find that US Airways is competitive on the routes I fly--often the same or less than Southwest. I like getting upgraded, boarding early, no bag charges, and having shorter lines at counters and (sometimes) security.
The other biggie for me is being serviced better if there are delays, like when my flight to the UK in May was canceled due to the volcano in Iceland. I had to be in the UK for a trade conference, and I had clients counting on me being there (so there was $$ on the table!). My status with US Air and a short phone call got me and a low status colleague on a flight to MUC with just 4 seats left and then on a connector to LHR. We were tired but on time for the conference. Was a bit crazed, but other colleagues were stuck in airports and got to the UK a couple days late or didn't go.
YMMV.
