balance + the Nolan chart

neat chart, I hadn't seen it before. very simple (and in a way too simplistic). helps me to sum up my point though (through all of this), which is, again: balance is key. Any of the extremes of the chart are unlivable imho. Zero or 100% economic or social control in any combination is not good. Obviously you have libertarian leanings (me too, though from the sounds of it, to a lesser extent). The libertarian extreme would advocate 0 taxes + 0 social control, ie no police, no laws (it's called anarchy)... obviously not any more livable than the other extremes (totalitarian socialism, etc)... to equate balance in government to balance in being mugged, is essentially to imply the libertarian extreme is ideal, that government is evil + provides no good... I doubt many would find that palatable... I can cite many examples of good provided by government that are not easily replicated in the private sector. Government produces some good with some bad (eg economic waste) in all facets of policy... better governments produce a higher ratio of good to bad...
I enjoy the discussion + debate, but I think this subject is a bit much for Saabnet... you're welcome to email me if you like, but I'll avoid further comment here.
cheers,
James...
