I agree that the Audi is a much better car than the Subaru, but for your intended purpose as a "winter beater" it might be much more expensive than you are bargaining for. An older, neglected Audi probably needs a timing belt/water pump/thermostat job ($1000 - $1500 at most indies), all ten front control arms and swaybar links replaced, at minimum the upper rear control arm bushings, up to eight CV boots, several small HVAC servo motors that require removal of the dashboard/center console, steering rack/hoses/pump, etc. Have I scared you enough yet?
We love our 1996 Audi A4 (only 130,000 miles), and it can outperform most cars in the snow and still looks good, but know what you are getting in to if you buy an older one.
