Sorry about jumping to the front of the line, but I just had an identical situation. 2004 Legacy we keep in Boulder that came back home when during service a coolant leak showed in the cylinder head gasket. Fortunately, it was under warranty, that would have expired in 2 days....just under the wire. There were service bulletins on this as I recall.

After looking at the procedure, and visiting with an ASE tech that used to work at a Sooboo dealer, his comment was that you HAVE to pull the engine up and out of the bay as the head bolts don't come out far enough to pull the heads while in the car. If you try to do it insitu, then you will never get the gasket sealed properly as you can't really get the surface 100% clean and sealed.

SOOOOOO, I am then assuming that the dealer would follow procedure and pull up the engine to accomplish the warranty repair calling for many hours of labor. What did they do? They pulled out the bolts far enough for the gasket to be replaced, gunked it up the best they could and put it back together.

Geeee, I wonder if they short charged the hours as the warranty sheet called for an engine change and they did this job in a matter of hours. To say the least, I wasn't happy about that, and should have made them go back into the shop, pull the engine and do the job correctly.

Wanna buy a 2004 Legacy Limited Ed 77K with newly "sealed" head gaskets :-)?
