Cleaning and waxing hints: My personal opinion is that clay bars are not a good choice. They accumulate dirt in the clay as you go and I don't care how many times you turn it, eventually that dirt is going to be back in the surface getting rubbed against your paint. They're also a RPITA to use. I don't see the reason for the clay craze.
Instead, do this: Wash the car with Dawn dishwashing liquid. Get some 3M Dark Color Swirl Mark Remover and use it to polish the car. You can do it by hand, although it will be a good workout. Polish the entire car using the SMR & soft towels and make it shine. Next, apply a coat of Klasse. Then put on a second coat. If you want, you can wait days or weeks for the second coat. One of the nice things about Klasse is that there's no real polishing stage or residue. Just do the whole car as instructed on the bottle and then give it a final wipe down with a dry towel or shammy.
This will restore your finish, unless it's seriously scratched. If you've been using a car wash, you might find that there are still swirl marks in the paint when you look at it in the sun. That might mean that you need more polishing. But, chances are that if you put some effort into the polish stage that it will look darn good.
Redo the Klasse every six months. Polish every 12 months before Klassing. In between just wash with some Meguires Gold Class wash and towel dry and it will look like you just Klassed it. You can get the SMR and Klasse on ebay. A 16 oz bottle of each will be good for five plus years or polishing and waxing.
Klasse and 3M SMR are available on Ebay. You can also get the 3M SMR from body shop suppliers. Klasse used to be available at Mercedes dealers too, but I don't know if they still carry it. There are also other on-line suppliers.
