Well, the major oil producers had four price increases in the past year, best as I recall.
There is more difference between synthetic oils than there is between petroleum oils. All of the latter are blended to meet the minimum standards.
Some of the synthetics are, too, but most will significantly outperform the non-synthetics. Like many things, the odds are that you will get what you pay for. Mobil 1 is excellent oil--the extended drain formulation is better.
Heck, the Europeans have been paying $15 a quart (liter) for synthetic oil for many years. Should caveat that by saying that the European oil specs were a lot more stringent than the US and the drain intervals significantly longer in most cases.
Think of what your oil change would be if you didn't do it yourself! A few years back, I took a neighbor out to pick up his Cadillac after some repairs. I noted that a non-synthetic oil change was about $75! And now most non-synthetic oil is selling for about $3 a qt.
