For starters, I've been using (and selling) AMSOIL synthetic lubes for about 35 years now, and have picked up a bit of knowledge about the various products. I am not a chemist, nor a tribologist, but I've been able to discuss the subjects with a number of folks who are.

I am not privy to the specific formulations of the synthetics- I suspect not many folks are. On the other hand, I'm not privy to the specific formulation of CocaCola, either. It really doesn't make any difference, so long as the products perform.

The ExxonMobil engineers spent about a year developing their long drain formulations. My understanding is that the Mobil extended drain formulation includes additive which allow for drain intervals longer than those provided by the standard formulas. The same is true for the AMSOIL products, which have 3 tiers of performance (manufacturer's recommended drain, six months or 10,000 miles, 1 year up to 25,000).

I'm not sure where you got your information that Mobil cannot be marketed in Europe as a synthetic oil. Last I knew, it was on the available in Europe. Far as I know, it is still the factory fill for Mercedes (and probably some other european cars-- But no sense in getting into a peeing match over trivia.

Formulations of lube oils have changed over the years as new base stocks and additives became available. Most of the synthetics now are blends of different base stocks. I do know that ExxonMobil is one (if not the) major producer of PAO base stocks. They might even be using some of this in their own oils. When the PAO plant got shut down because of hurricane flooding, Mobil 1 was put on allocation for a while--
