I do believe it is a 1.5 ton unit. The reason why they're suggesting Goodman over the Carrier is because installation of the indoor coil/evaporator/heat exchanger is supposedly easier, leading to lower labor costs.
The old unit is a 30 year old builders' grade Rheem. It runs fine, but is no longer cooling. We've had it recharged twice and it hasn't made any difference, it will just run and run. The service techs have all said there isn't much they can do to repair it and that we're better off replacing it.
