Re-coning quality speakers Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Wed, 15 Aug 2012 12:15:41 In Reply to: Are they Genesis speakers?, RS [Profile/Gallery] , Wed, 15 Aug 2012 10:07:28 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I tried to re-cone the 14-inch drivers in my 35 year old JBL l55 speakers and ran into an unanticipated problem. These LE-14 drivers made by JBL have an extremely tight clearance betwen the voice coil and magnet assembly. Re-coning them requires the use of mylar shims (buy a sheet of drafting mylar and cut some 1-inch wide strips from it) to maintain proper clearance.
Attempting to re-cone without use of the shims will invaribly result in the voice coil dragging against the magnet assembly with resulting horrible sound quality and potential voice coil damage. I went to a local guy working from his basement to correct my error.
Other high quality drivers from the same era may have the same issue.
