well, if it's like other Dells I've worked on, changing the motherboard is not a simple thing... much easier to do in a generic pc. With a generic PC, if the standards change, you can usually find a used motherboard from the end of that generation (I suggest looking for ASUS boards) and swap in leaving all else. With a Dell, a generic motherboard probably won't even fit in the case physically! This is one of the main reasons I'd never buy a Dell for my own personal use. Though I'm willing to DIY computer repairs - for those not keen on that, the Dell customer support might make their computers worthwhile...
sometimes caps fail on a mb and can be replaced... often though, it's just that the OS has become unstable for various reasons... sometimes just a clean reinstall is all that is needed. but imho, windoze 7 is better to put on now than XP if the machine is going to access the web/potential virii... need protection kept up to date.
