I think Ubuntu 12.04 is better than 10.04 which is what I used previously. I've always found that doing a clean installation is better than attempting an in-place upgrade.
I have not had any problems, but went with the Xubuntu variant since I don't care for the "make everything look like a cell phone" direction that Ubuntu (like Windows 8) has gone to in their main release. At least with Linux there are quite a few different desktop environments to choose from. I'm finding that Xfce performs well and has the traditional type user interface that I prefer but it does lack some of Gnome's features.
Another Linux distribution to consider is Linux Mint, which is based on Ubuntu but looks like it should be easier for most people to deal with.
All this is for desktop and laptop use, for servers I usually stick with Debian or CentOS.
