5% size difference? Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Sat, 14 Sep 2013 12:54:57 In Reply to: see if they can be shaved or get 2 used, Trev, Sat, 14 Sep 2013 12:04:06 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
A size difference of less than 5% might be acceptable, but I'm not sure how you can find this out for certain. Note that a 5% difference is about the difference in size between a 195 and a 205 tire if you were comparing only the rubber portion, but a large part of the wheel/tire package diameter (and therefore circumference) is based on the size of the metal wheel, so the percentage of the total package will be less.
If you are getting rid of the car, I would not buy four new tires, but would buy two similar Contipro tires in the same size. When we bought our used Audi A6 Avant Quattro, the car came with new rear tires in the same size as the fronts, but a different brand. We have driven the car about 25,000 miles since then without issue in the drivetrain (plenty of other issues, but...). This past spring, I replaced the now-older front tires with a pair of newer, same-sized tires of different model - still no problems. Audi and some of the bulletin boards will advise against this, and urge you to shave your new tires to match the old ones; I didn't and it worked out fine for me, not racing this car - YMMV.
