We had an 85 300D sedan. Bought it with about 175,000 miles and sold it several years later with over 200,000. I'll bet someone is still driving it today. It was a well-built car, with adequate power (but certainly not like a turbo Saab), mileage in the high 20's and low 30's, fine ride and handling. The interior (MB Tex seats) was outstanding. There was some rust on the lower front fenders, from years spent in the Chicago area. Not the best car in cold weather, but the block heater helped get it running. Ours was an automatic. I also recall driving a stick shift 240D back in the day. It was also built like a tank, but about as slow as a tank, too! Good luck with your search. I think a nice clean 240 or 300D, if you can find one, would be a great buy.
