I've been in a few of these MB diesels. I liked Mike Lynch's description of them as the car for closeted car enthusiasts - they don't do anything well that a normal enthusiast appreciates (like accelerate) but still have an ardent hands-on fan base. The reputation for a sturdy body and interior is certainly true. The MBTex seats last for ever - the dash and wood will still age but probably better than most cars. The 300D has adequate power and is automatic only. The 240D doesn't have adequate power. If you find this makes it more 'engaging' to drive and live somewhere where the driving is a little more mellow then that might be okay. ~65 horsepower can be adequate, but probably not in a pretty heavy car like this. As others have mentioned you might not find the fuel economy as impressive as you expect compared to modern standards, especially when you consider the current high price of diesel, so it's a little hard to justify one these days compared to say a used 9-5, but I certainly appreciate less than rational car choices.
